1952 saw the establishment of Jabatan Telekom Brunei (JTB) as a government department responsible for the development of communication systems and infrastructure. In 1955, a Very High Frequency (VHF) radio network was installed.

Automatic electromechanical step by-step (Strowger) exchanges were introduced in Brunei and Kuala Belait.
